• Information for First Time Attendees

    1. What should I wear to a symphony performance?

While there is no strict dress code, most attendees opt for business casual or cocktail attire. Think dresses, skirts, slacks, button-down shirts, and blazers. Comfortable yet classy is the way to go.

    2. When should I arrive?

Aim to arrive at least 30 minutes before the performance begins. This allows time for parking, finding your seat, and getting settled before the music starts. Latecomers may not be admitted until a suitable break in the performance.

    3. How long do performances typically last?

Most symphony performances last between 1.5 to 2 hours, including a 15-20 minute intermission.

    4. Can I bring my young children?

Children are welcome, but it is important to ensure they are able to sit quietly for extended periods. Some performances may be more suitable for younger audiences; check with the symphony for family-friendly options.

    5. When is it appropriate to clap?

Applause is generally reserved for the end of each piece, not between movements. If you are unsure, wait for the conductor to lower their arms and turn to the audience before clapping.

    6. Can I take photos or videos during the performance?

Photography and videography are not allowed during performances to avoid distracting the musicians and other audience members.

    7. What should I do if I need to leave during the performance?

If you must leave, do so quietly and discreetly between pieces or during applause. Returning to your seat should be done at an appropriate break to minimize disruption.

    8. Is food or drink allowed in the concert hall?

The concert halls we perform in do not allow food or drink inside the performance space. Enjoy refreshments in designated areas before the performance or during intermission.

    9. How should I behave during the performance?

Silence your phone and refrain from talking, rustling programs, or making other noises that could disturb those around you. Being attentive and respectful enhances the experience for everyone.

    10. Can I read the program notes during the performance?

It is best to read program notes before the performance or during intermission. Rustling pages can be disruptive to others.

    11. What if I have questions or need assistance?

Ushers and staff members are available to help with any questions or concerns. Do not hesitate to ask for assistance.

    12. Are there any pre-concert talks or events?

There is not a pre-concert talk or event for every concert at the TSO, but be sure to visit our Events Page to find out more information.

    13. How can I support the symphony?

Consider purchasing season tickets, making a donation, or volunteering. Your support helps sustain the arts and ensures the symphony can continue to offer high-quality performances.
